Tested snippets

Copy-ready project files for the common tasks — a flow, llm, code, map, parallel, switch and call steps, prompt variants and fragments, a dataset, one experiment per factor kind, rate limits and the spend cap — every one of them passes aqven check.

Start here when you write a file of a kind you have not written in this project yet: a flow, a step, a prompt with a variant slot, a dataset, an experiment, a provider entry. Every block on this page is one file of a small working project. Copy the block that matches your task, rename the ids, and run aqven check.

The project reviews a marketplace listing from its text and photos. It lives in the AQVEN repository as a test project, and a test compares every block on this page with the file of the same path, byte for byte. The same test runs aqven check on the project and fails on any error or warning. The title of each block is the file path from the package root, the folder that holds aqven.yaml.

  • types.py is not shown: aqven generate (or aqven check) writes it from the YAML.
  • The names of generated classes, such as ListingReviewPrepareOut, come from that file. Read them with aqven tree instead of guessing them.
  • YAML is canonical: block style, strings in double quotes, no comments, no anchors.

Project file: provider, rate limits, spend cap

Section titled “Project file: provider, rate limits, spend cap”

on_rate_limit decides what a 429 does to the calls of one model: auto pauses that model and halves its parallel calls, fixed waits retry_wait_seconds between retry_attempts retries, fail hands the call to the agent’s fallback_models at once. limits.concurrency is how many calls each model of the provider starts with, 8 when it is unset; add limits.rpm only when the provider publishes a request limit for your account. research.spend_cap_usd is the spend cap of every series in the project: a series pauses for a person at 90% of it. Change the cap only to a number the owner of the project named.

There is no routing key on this provider on purpose: when an OpenRouter provider declares routing, AQVEN sends it as OpenRouter’s provider object, and it replaces the provider object of every agent’s provider_options. The agents below put data_collection into their own provider object instead.

settings.provider_options is sent as is in the request body, so OpenRouter’s provider object goes there. fallback_models answer when the request to the model fails, including a rate limit the model’s lane gave up on. A response that ends as an error, a refusal or a cut-off follows output.on_error, output.on_refusal and output.on_truncated: retry asks the same model again, up to output.retries times, fallback moves to the next model, fail fails the step. limits.seconds fails a step that runs longer. There is no key for what a model can read or produce: a live probe proves it (aqven models check <agent> --project . --live).

A record lists its fields; every Text has a maxLength and every list a maxItems. MapItemError is a built-in type: the record of one failed item of a map. A flow input may nest media in a record, as Listing does, but an inference attaches only its own top-level Image, Image[] and other media inputs: bind the media field itself, as match_photos below binds $input.photos.

Every step of the flow is listed in order, and the flow output is built in returns. The output says which aspects went unread (unread) and how the panel members who answered voted (votes), so a run that lost an item never looks complete.

An llm step with photos, a prompt variant and a fragment

Section titled “An llm step with photos, a prompt variant and a fragment”

The node binds inputs; the inference next to it declares their types, the output, the variant slot, the checks and the display. The photos are an Image[] input: every image goes to the model as its own attachment at the resolution you stored. category picks the text of the slot category_guide: furniture.md or electronics.md for those values, general.md for any other. The prompt renders the slot with {{ variants.category_guide }} and pulls a shared paragraph in with {% include %}.

body maps a branch key to a sibling node. The three branches share one inference and differ only in the agent. quorum closes the node as soon as min_ok branches have succeeded: it is a race, the slowest member is not waited for, so $ok[*].decision usually holds two votes. Use join: {use: "all"} when every opinion has to be in the result. Inside out, $branch.<key>.<field> reads one branch by its key.

This prompt is plain text: AQVEN appends every input with its description and the output fields for you.

flows/listing_review/nodes/panel/decide.prompt.md
You decide whether a marketplace listing goes live. Publish it when every aspect passed and the photos match the text. Ask for fixes when an aspect failed but the seller can repair it. Reject it when the photos show a hazard or a different item.

The switch covers every value of the enum; there is no default case. A case runs a node, binds values, or both. The fix case runs explain, a call node that runs the flow fix_list and binds its output.

A media input here is a blob the project server stored: its id is sha256- and the SHA-256 of the bytes. A dataset that comes from a table or a folder of files is built by a script in the project root, next to pyproject.toml, so it can be rebuilt with one command. This script wrote the file above, byte for byte. It uses ruamel.yaml, which every AQVEN project already has, and writes canonical YAML: block style, double-quoted strings, null for an empty optional input, no anchors.

An experiment changes one factor, declared in varies: what is the kind of change and nodes the local ids of the nodes it changes. Each variant sets values for those nodes only; a variant without nodes is the flow as written. The things you compare are variants, the rows of the result; what you measure are checks, its columns. Two prompts, two models or two merge rules are variants of one factor, never two checks on one variant.

whatNodes it changesA variant’s value
agentllm nodesan agent id of the project
promptllm nodesa file prompts/<name>.md of the experiment
useany nodea node in nodes/ of the experiment, with the same in and out
flowcall nodesa flow in flows/ of the experiment, or of the project, with the same input and output

agent: another model on the same prompt and schema.
